New Traditions

Every year since I was 12 years old, my Christmases have been incredibly hectic. This was the year that my parents split up, which created the obviously complicated new dynamic of Christmas. We always spent Christmas morning at my mom's house, since this still felt like "home" to us. Unfortunately, though, this meant that we still had another Christmas morning to fit in... complete with stepsisters who were waiting for us as patiently as possible so we could open gifts together. After that, we'd rush straight to my grandparents' on my dad's side to do our Christmas lunch. So yes, by 1pm, I'd already had 3 Christmases.

It got even more complicated when Brad and I started dating for years and then when we were married. We had to figure out how to fit his family in too. And somewhere in all of that, we had to fit our Christmas in with eachother.

Whew...

I'm tired just typing it out.

So this year, I decided things needed to change. It was just going to be WAY too much now that we have Noah, and it really wasn't going to be fair to him to try and fit all those people in, in one day.

Fortunately, everyone was more than willing to oblige. We did Christmas Eve with my mom and dad in the same day. Around 4pm, we went to my dad's, which gave us plenty of quality time with the family. No rushing!! Everyone was relaxed and enjoyed being together.

Noah's big Christmas gift from "Granddaddy Jimmy" and "Mama D" (my dad and stepmom Desna) was a Red Flyer wagon. SO cute!! He also got a Belkie Bear from my stepsister Sarah who works at Belk. You will be seeing a reaccuring theme in the following years. My two families tend to do doubles. Just keep reading.

After my dad's, we went over to my mom's house for a pajama party! We all got in our Christmas pj's, ate our traditional shrimp cocktail (along with other yummy stuff), and opened our gifts.

Sooo... does that bear look familiar?? :)

Noah's big gift from my mom was a new floor gym! He's been getting so bored with his, so she went ALL out on a new one... complete with lights and jungle noises and music. It's ridiculously tacky and he loves it.

Everything was so calm (minus my brother who talks nonstop... honestly, we're not sure he breathes). He's just so darn excited about going away to basic training, that he just goes on and on about it. It's kinda cute.

Noah was out by 9pm and slept in his carseat till we got home around 12am. Luckily, he was already in his pj's! We fed him and put him down, and he didn't wake up again until 8:30 this morning!! Merry Christmas to mommy! :)

He's also gotten his first case of the sniffles. :( We think he might be starting to teethe, because the poor boy didn't stop chewing on his fingers all night. He's not cranky. He's just got a runny nose. Normally, I think kids with runny noses are just plain gross... a gross, sticky, snotty mess. However, MY kid has got to be the cutest sniffly baby I've ever seen.

Many families stop the family Christmas tour once they have kids. If you don't put your foot down early, though, you end up still doing it for years. We still did it after our first kid, but by the time the twins came along we started easing our way out of it. Now that we have four kids, we've managed to get out of it altogether!

Of course, we are different than you guys; all the visiting was more of an obligation than a fun tradition. My idea of a great Christmas is sleeping late, eating good food, and managing to get exactly what the kids had on their lists. If I find a gift that my husband likes, as well, it's a Christmas miracle :-).
