Spring is so pretty.
It's my favorite season for many obvious reasons.
The flowers are gorgeous.
My boy gets to be outside more.
But Spring has its less-than-lovely side too.
Like the pups looking for shade from the heat.
Or this adorable bumblebee that stalks me out front.
(can't tell you how many times its "buzzed" me)
Or how sweaty Noah gets.
Forget sweat. The boy just gets plain dirty.

Very Pinteresting...
I have a new obsession: Pinterest.
I've seriously been up past 2am the last couple of nights just pinning. It's so addictive!
I've always kept little inspiration boards on my computer, usually just copying and pasting to Word or Paint or whatever. But to have a *free* website that lets me do this? And automatically lists my sources (because really, that's gets old after awhile...) for me? Awesome. I'm hooked.
And I think I've gotten a couple of friends hooked too... sorry 'bout that. But if it's any consolation, I love looking at what you found. :)
Inspiration for my dream home
It's no secret I have a thing for old Southern plantation style architecture. Actually, it's more of a blend between Southern Belle and Victorian. My mom always decorated our home in that Victorian style... nothing too over-the-top. Ok, that's a lie. She has a massive crystal chandelier in her dining room. And designates two Christmas trees to only Victorian ornaments. But other than that, she keeps it pretty modern and beautiful. Maybe I'll post pics of my old home one day soon.
Anyway, I think I seriously got my taste from my parents.
Here's a touch of what I want in my dream home when we're fabulously wealthy and have nothing else better to do than sit on our porch and sip lemonade and plan our latest trip to Europe... yeah, that's why it's called a dream home.
#1 criteria for my next home? Massive front porch.
It was in our list of must-haves when we were originally house hunting, but we didn't end up getting it.
So next go around, I'm going all out.
The only thing missing on this porch is a lazy cat lounging around.
The only thing missing on this porch is a lazy cat lounging around.
One of my favorite things to do when we're in Kiawah is drive around and look at the amazing homes. And to think these are just people's summer homes!
The pictures hardly do them justice. They're so pretty in person.
One of Brad's favorites...
Then there's all the extra frilly pretties out there to look at.
Look how pretty these pillows are!
Other favorites:
(this one just had google listed as a source?)
Fyi: don't pin food pictures right before bedtime.
Guacamole bruschetta
Grilled chicken with Lemon Basil Pasta
(from the Pioneer Woman... love that lady)
Grilled Salmon with Avocado Salsa
Oops... how did Johnny Depp end up on my "yum" board?
Moving on....
Look at the cute ideas I found for Noah's birthday this year!
Yeah.
So needless to say, I'm hooked.
Somehow my family has still managed to be fed and clothed.
Probably because I'm doing most of the pinning after everyone has left me alone for the night.
Hope everyone else is being a little more productive than me.
This is not looking very promising for the rest of the week. It's only Monday.

Got my hair did.
Y'all remember this post where I was thinking about getting my hair done again? (I mean, it's only been a year, what's the rush?). Well, I started researching salons for the heck of it. Just in case we ever came up with a spare couple hundred bucks to spend on my hair. Out of nowhere y'know. That happens all the time.
Anyway, I'm a chronic "salon hopper". I've never had a salon that I considered my salon, or a stylist that I loved and therefore would follow wherever she/he went. It's not because I'm too hard to please. It's usually because I don't ever leave a place feeling super impressed. I've gone to every kind of salon under the sun... the small, neighborly types; the big, flashy, gotta-take-out-a-loan-to-afford-this types; and then everything in between. This time, I wasn't going to take my chances.
Although y'all were sweet about my last haircut (the short one with bangs)... let's face it. They butchered my hair. It was nothing like I'd asked for. I wanted fringy bangs and a cute layered cut that fell right above my shoulders. I got a helmet head.
I would never tell my mother this, because I used her stylist, and it was a gift from her.
Anyways...
I did my research. I looked up every salon in the nearby Charlotte area. I wanted good service, an awesome haircut, to feel pampered, but not have to pay a buttload of money (where did that expression come from?? I suddenly found myself slightly grossed out by that term just now...).
After reading review after review and looking at pictures and prices... oh yeah, and fyi to you salons who don't list your prices?? If you don't have them listed, then I assume I can't afford it, and my hair should not cost that much. The end.
Yeah so after doing a ton of research, I finally found a place I wanted to go to... eventually. Y'know, when my husband magically found an extra hundred in his pockets. Then out of nowhere (or not so much... I wasn't being all that discreet), Brad asked me if I'd like to get my hair done. I told him no way, I couldn't justify spending that much money on HAIR. We could use that money for something else we needed. You never know, the next plague may include frogs or gnats or something. He let it go, since he realized I wasn't backing down. The other day, he came home from running an errand and informed me that he'd made an appointment at a salon. I was getting my hair done on Thursday. I asked where he'd made it, and when he told me, my heart sunk a little. I didn't want to rain on his desperate to make my wife hot sweetness parade, but I'd been there before. They charge too much and don't do that great of a job. Last time, I'd gotten the owner's daughter. It was stupid. She had the personality of a rock and did an ok job.
I thanked him profusely, but I asked if I could switch and use this other salon I'd found. He said he didn't care, that it was my hair. He just knew I wasn't going to ever make the appointment myself.
So today was the day.
I tried not to have any expectations, but this place had 65 reviews, 63 of them being 5 stars. I was pretty excited. I even wore a dress. Because I didn't have a toddler. I could be a girl and not a mom for once.
I've dragged this out, I know.
Without boring you to tears, I'll just say this.
I found my permanent salon.
It's happy and friendly and fun. They did an amazing job. They gave me their input without being pushy. Everyone was stylish and professional, but still stayed true to themselves.
If you live in the Charlotte area, do yourself a favor and check this place out.
In case you were curious, Jen and Amanda were the girls who worked with me (they have pictures on the site), and they were fantastic. And yes, I already left a review for them. :)
Before I show you the pictures, I need to clarify something.
Remember that random fact post I did where I mentioned how my right eye was messed up when I was born and it can't go up? Yeah, well here's your proof. Sorry if it gives you the willies...
So here's what I got...
(I couldn't decide which one to use, so I did both)
Honey/caramel highlights... because the hubs likes my natural color (it always looks more red in the light), I decided to go really natural with them. They add a little depth, which is what I wanted. I may go a little lighter again next time around, just for fun.
Got it chopped a few inches, right below my shoulders, with a few layers.
I had a good shot that Brad took of the back, but it was in RAW, and I'm not PS saavy enough to figure out why it won't open up a RAW file yet. Anyways, I'm really happy with it.
OH! Best part: After leaving a tip and buying some good shampoo, I was still $50 under my budget!!
They use Arrojo products, which I was all happy about. Did any of y'all ever see Nick Arrojo on TLC's What Not to Wear? They have a new guy now, but Nick used to be on there for a long time. His contract was up, and turns out, he was busy producing this product line and opening up a school. Awesome, right?
Normally, I get all skeptical when stylists try to upsale me on their products. But this shampoo actually left my hair feeling like silk and it'll prolong the color. I haven't had any good shampoo in years, so I'm all kinds of thrilled.
On another note... and not that I'm not completely happy and definitely feel these girls deserve a medal... this is just something I've wondered for years.
This is an honest to goodness, sincere question to any of you former or current hairstylists (or anyone who has an answer)...
why is a tip expected?
The price of the haircut is already stated, based on the level of expertise/education/etc. Regardless of whether they could do the style before they got more training, the price goes up as they get smarter.
I'm paying the amount quoted to me.
If you're a plumber, you give a price. After the work is done, you don't get tipped. Same goes for an electrician. Or most service industries, except for the restaurant, and on that kind of minimum pay, they live for tips (I get that one). After my mom has an interpreting job, she doesn't get a tip, regardless of how well she did or how friendly she was. So when did this practice of tipping for hair/nails/massages start? Just curious. Maybe I'll google it.
Happy almost Friday! :)

if I had a million dollars...
So I got the new Pottery Barn Kids catalog in the mail yesterday.
And man-oh-man, I could spend a year's salary at this place.
I love the blue and green plaid on the right. So sweet and Eastery but still boyish.
Aren't these cute?!
At $25 each, they should be.
Love this and would love to get Noah's name monogrammed on it.
Y'all... look. A Curious George room.
I guess I'll have to be okay with just the sheets. :)
Oh wait! Look! I can afford this Easter garland!
It's only $8! :)
And let's just say, Brad is thanking his lucky stars that we didn't have a girl first.
Because we'd all be in the poor house.
Isn't it fun to spend thousands without actually having spent a dime? :)

Summer Beach Trip... um, in the fall...
We're back!
So anyways...
The beach.
Before I get to ANY of the details of the trip, I need to give a major shout-out to my parents. We were able to stay in a beautiful 4-bedroom/4-bathroom condo, complete with dining room, oceanfront balcony, granite countertops... pretty lavish stuff... right up my mother's alley. We stayed there for free. In fact, the only thing we paid for was a few grocery items and any "extras" we did (like Putt-Putt). Everything else, totally free. They're awesome. There's no way we'd be able to go at all without them (other than Kiawah, of course, which my dad lets us use, but it's been rented out lately).
This was Noah's first actual beach trip. He's been to Kiawah, but that was this past January when it was freeeeezing, so needless to say, there was no playing in the sand that time.
Brad and I were so eager to see what he'd do. It's actually kind of fun that we waited this long to introduce him to it. He's old enough to actually have a real reaction.
He was fascinated.
Noah has this compulsive need to sort things... food, toys, whatever.
Y'all, he tried to organize the beach.
He literally would grab a hand full of sand, look at it, then decide where it needed to go (to his right or to his left). I'm not sure what his qualifications are for how it gets sorted, but I don't guess that's for us to know. :)
And then he did what just about every baby does... ate it.
It seemed that the more we protested, the tastier it looked (things don't change much as we grow, huh?).
Apart from the oh-so-yummy sand, he really enjoyed having free reign to crawl to his little heart's content. He wore his little chubby self out.
As for the ocean, he gave it a try. He thought it was funny that it chased him as he crawled away. But actually being in it was a different story. He tolerated it, but I think the feel of it pulling him towards the sea freaked him out a little. Not to mention that quicksand effect.
We actually pulled in the driveway Saturday evening, but I'm kind of on a blog hiatus right now. I want to blog. It's just that there are way too many other things that need to be done first/instead. I was actually super impressed with myself. I got us all unpacked and organized (mostly) Saturday night. Brad thought I was a little loony, I think, for rushing the process. But I know us. Life was going to resume on Monday, and I was going to lose Brad (as a helper). So I took total advantage of the fact that he could watch Noah while I did laundry, put things away, and piled up the suitcases to go back in the attic.
But even though things are all washed and back to normal, I still have a lot that needs to be done around here. And it's a little hard when I'm glued to the computer screen (also hard to be an effective parent when glued to said screen).
So anyways...
The beach.
Our view.

We got down there Sunday evening. Noah did really well traveling, even though he was totally squished. Unfortunately, he didn't sleep as long as we'd hoped, and he was bored. So we stopped by Target in Florence to pick up a car charger for Brad's laptop. We had gotten Noah a DVD of Curious George episodes. Brad set up his laptop in the car for Noah to watch the rest of the way. It lasted exactly 2 hours. He was an angel. Thank you, Curious George.

(please ignore my pastiness... and the bruise on my leg.)
So he was happy to stick with the sand and seashells. He liked tasting those too. You'd think we never fed the kid.
It worked out well for Madison that we got to come. Her best friend always comes with her to the beach. It's a tradition. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to go this time. Madison was devastated, and while there was a lot of texting going on throughout the trip between the two, Madison was still able to have a blast with us. We took her along with us to every fun thing we did.
Noah also loves his Aunt Madison. She's his buddy. She's so good with him, and it's fun to watch them interact.

The place we stayed at had an indoor pool just for little guys. It was about a foot deep and had water spouts, water falls, and little fountains. It was big hit for Noah.
Noah made a friend while he was there. His name was Asher. Little Asher has DS. He was the cutest little guy. He's two years old, about the same size as Noah, and is also still learning how to walk. They were pretty cute together.
Swimming always wears you out...
Everyone knows that you can't go to Myrtle Beach without playing Putt-Putt. So we took Madison to the BEST Putt-Putt course around. It's located across the street from where the Pavilion used to be (ahem... which is now a useless piece of grassy land just sitting there serving no purpose...), and it's awesome. It's multi-leveled, complete with waterfalls and pipes and crazy hills. Even Noah stayed entertained, but that's probably due to the fact that he doesn't walk yet, so we had to push his stroller through all kinds of rough terrain. And take the elevator a few times. His daddy is also super happy about the fact that Noah really liked the golf club. He dragged it along with him the entire time.
One "extra" that we thankfully didn't have to pay for was golf. Myrtle Beach is a major golf city, and since my stepdad and hubby both love playing (and this was a birthday trip for my stepdad as well), they got to go twice. Brad really needed this trip. He needed a chance to get away and not think about life for awhile. The first day they went, Brad rushed out without any sunblock or a hat, so he came back with a mild burn. It wasn't too bad, but the issue with Brad's sunburns isn't neccesarily the pain. It's the itch. He's actually allergic to the sun, so when he gets burned, he also gets sun poisoning every time. He actually went to the ER once for it. He says it's like it itches underneath his skin. It gives me chills thinking about it. Fortunately, it wasn't that bad. And he definitely remembered the sunblock the second time around.
Also great at Myrtle Beach... the shopping!!
My little sister is the queen of bargain hunting. She got it from her grandma who was somehow able to shop at Walmart and walk around looking like she only shopped at Talbots. It's amazing.
Anyway, our favorite shops are found at Barefoot Landing (the Christmas store!!) and the Tanger Outlet mall.
I'm a big sucker for girly things like china and crystal. I don't own that much of it, but I love it. They have a Lenox outlet down there, and I loooove going in there every time. It gets harder and harder to walk out empty handed. Turns out, everything in the store was 50% off the original *outlet* price. And what just about killed me was walking out without this set:
Anyway, when it all comes down to it, I suppose it's more important to pay our mortgage than to have cute little porcelain owls on the table.
my husband and his sense of humor.
Noah's not so keen on the whole Halloween idea either. :)
my mom with her girls (and Noah)... yes, I know. we all were blessed with some fantastic booties. lol.
I know you can't really see it, but the detail matches my china, Opal Innocence...
...and yes, we actually do eat off of them occasionally. I'm not about to have pretty china and not use it.
The reason for this particular pattern? Opal is my birthstone, the pattern matched my wedding gown, and it's just
so darn pretty. Elegant and understated. Ok, I'll stop rambling on about my china now.
And look how cute these little guys are!!...
We did, however, buy Noah his first set of shoes. They're so cute. We went by the Stride Rite outlet and had his feet measured. Originally, we'd had them measured at a Rack Room, but we figured she got it wrong. The lady there said he was a 5 or 5 1/2. The lady at Stride Rite was aMAZing. She measured him and told us that he was a 6, to be safe, a 6 1/2, and he has a wide foot. So she suggested we get a 6 1/2 extra wide. The problem is that his little feet are so chubby at the top that it smashes his chub and hurts him. Poor baby. He has since worn his new sneakers and seems to like them.
Oh, and did I mention, we got two pair for $20. At Stride Rite. How awesome is that.
We had already checked the weather forecast and knew it was scheduled to rain on Thursday. So we planned to go to the aquarium. I'd like for our little family trips to have something educational in them (and fun. no reason to make learning a drag). Noah LOVED it. They had a little area where you could pet the sting rays. They were so cute! Noah didn't really want to touch them, but we walked down to where you could see them swimming under water. They would swim right up to the window, and Noah would giggle hysterically. It was the cutest thing. Nothing else in that place made him laugh like that. So we bought him a stuffed sting ray. It was only like $7, and he likes it a lot. I guess it was more for our memories than his. Totally worth it. :)
They had some of the most incredible creatures. The piranhas were the creepiest. They didn't move. Those things freak me out more than sharks.
See that white thing on the bottom right corner? Yeah. Apparently, he was the loser of the crowd.
Or someone forgot to feed them. Either way, even a piranha can't trust piranhas. Freaky stuff.
(doesn't it look like a scene from The Little Mermaid?)
Noah's favorites.
a sea dragon.
We also went out for mine and Art's birthdays. His is 3 days after mine, so we went to an old Myrtle Beach favorite... the Flamingo Grill. That place has been in business for like 30+ years (my dad was shocked to hear it was still open). Their food is always amazing. I got salmon oscar (grilled salmon with crabmeat, asparagus, snow peas, and garlic mashed potatoes... SO good).
All in all, it was a perfect trip. My only complaint: nobody had changing stations. Where are all of these moms changing their babies at?? Poor kid had to get changed in the car a few times. Other than that, it was incredible. Can't wait till next year.
Phew! That took me 3 days to finish! Still catching up on the reading, but I hope everyone had a great week!
